Shannon Musical Society is delighted to announce that “The Wedding Singer” will be the new show for the coming year 2010 / 2011.  Based on the 1998 film of the same name starring Adam Sandler, the show contains all original songs….80’s style!!  Nominated for a host of Tony awards when it opened on Broadway on April 2006, the musical has proven to be a huge hit with cast members and audiences alike!

Similar in plot to the film (with some differences) here’s a brief synopsis of the show.

“It’s 1985 and rock-star wannabe Robbie Heart, who still lives in his grandmother's basement, is New Jersey’s favourite wedding singer. He’s the life of the party until his fianceé, Linda, leaves him at the altar. Shot through the heart, Robbie makes every wedding as disastrous as his own. When he meets Julia, an admiring young waitress, Robbie falls madly in love. Only trouble is Julia is about to be married to a Wall Street shark, and unless Robbie can pull off the performance of a decade, the girl of his dreams will be gone forever. With a score that pays loving homage to the pop songs of the 1980s, The Wedding Singer takes us back to a time when hair was big, greed was good, collars were up, and a wedding singer might just be the coolest guy in the room.”

So it’s the same old “Boy loses Girls, Boy meets Girls, Boy fights for Girl, Boy wins Girl” story….you can’t beat it!

With two leading characters, six supporting characters, eight cameos (including a Billy Idol impersonator!!) and a large/strong chorus, this year’s show promises to be a great success.

Even more exciting is the news that this year’s producer is none other than our very own Aodan Fox.  The committee is delighted that he has agreed to produce Shannon this year, and wishes him the very best. No doubt he will do the society proud. Keeping with the “great news” section, back with us again this year are Carmel Griffin as our M.D., assisted by Rosemary Walsh.

That’s it for now.  Enjoy the summer break and keep an eye on the S.M.S webpage for further news throughout the coming months.
